What Happened:
Gracie kept looking around to see if anybody was eating the whipped cream during the art activity. Others were spraying whipped cream onto their plate and mixing food coloring in. She was also watching to see what to do with it. She would put one finger in the whipping cream and taste it. She would then mix a color in it and taste it again. Soon she was mixing, smiling and tasting, but took care not to get messy.
Gracie never did get down and dirty, but she did get into mixing and tasting. She objected when we cleaned up. She said she wanted to take it home.
Opportunities and Possibilities:
Gracie seemed to enjoy mixing the colors. They bled into each other making a different color. Tomorrow we will try coffee filters and eye droppers so she can see how the colors mix in the filters. It will be another way to teach children about color, dyes, paints, crayons, materials, etc.
What it means:
Gracie, it looked like you were afraid to get started but once you did, you really enjoyed this activity. You discovered it was OK to get messy. It also looks like you enjoyed tasting the whip cream. You practiced being an artist and a scientist by mixing different colors together.
To Mom & Dad:
Gracie said that she wanted her mom and dad to see her whipped cream project, but she was slow to get involved. Do you find that she is hesitant to enjoy activites? How do you encourage her to go for it?
